Why do we use GPTZero?

GPTZero is known to be the state of the art in humanness assessment but it’s still far from perfect. Don’t worry too much; the GPTZero API can be strict. It focuses on two main criteria when analyzing your content.
  1. Personalization → The more the content is specific to you and your context the better.
  2. Perplexity → This measures how “surprised” an AI model is by a passage. Human writing usually has higher perplexity (it’s less predictable), while AI-generated writing tends to be more predictable and shows lower perplexity.
    • Unique insights often stem from exclusive data, expert perspective, or personal experience. Use these more often.
    • Increase your writing’s perplexity:
      • Incorporate insights from your own expertise
      • Share personal experiences and specific examples
      • Use varied vocabulary and avoid repetitive, formulaic language
  3. Burstiness → Assesses the variation in sentence structure. Human writers naturally combine short and long sentences and use varying complexity, while AI often produces a more uniform rhythm. Here are some ways to improve your burstiness score:
    • Vary the lengths of your sentences.
    • Use short sentences for impact, then follow with longer ones to allow your readers to absorb your ideas and reflect on what you’ve shared.
    • Vary the lengths of your paragraphs as well.

Practical steps to take

We’ve already prompt engineered the AI content writer to sound as human as possible & follow best practices. That said, here’s how to make your prompts even better
For all your content
  • Give some examples (paste urls) of the type of content you’re aiming to follow
  • Tell the AI to write like a certain persona - “You’re an expert data scientist…”
  • Tell the AI who your reader/ICP is
  • Define the tone you aim want to follow. Eg easy going vs analytical vs measured.
  • Assume the AI is using overly complex words and is being overly verbose.
